  1. Shortly after the holidays, I put in a huge order of rings with several projects in mind. However, the dragonscale combination, as one member of this forum warned me in chat one night (sadly, just after the rings shipped), was far too tight. So, I had to put off my attempt at completing a dragonscale piece once more, but realized the rings I ordered were the right colors to make a US flag inlay. I'm almost done with it and I hope to sell it to offset my mistake and get new rings to try again. However, as a sheet of E4-1 is wont to do, when I hold it up by the corners, the middle sags. It got me thinking I haven't seen any (or if I have, I haven't noticed) inlay pics showing the inlay held up or displayed in any way. It's usually a top-down shot of it laying on the table or the floor. So, what I'm wondering is, how do you all display your inlays? The two ways I was thinking of is running either string/rope/twine of some sort through the top row, or possibly a thin metal or wood dowel. The string idea doesn't seem to quite solve the center-sag issue, though. The dowel seems better. And what about the bottom of the inlay? Should I figure out a way to put something to stabilize there, too?

To Etsy, or not to Etsy, that is the question

In my experience, unless you're an expert in coding, it's easier to find a site like Etsy or Handmade Artists to sell and use the website as advertisement or a gallery. There's just so much to consider and worry about when selling off your own site. Things like does your host have the proper SSL to safely run credit cards? Which eCommerce software will make you want to strangle someone the least? If you bypass the SSL and eCommerce solutions and do something like a Paypal shopping cart on your site, it becomes a question of how professional looking you want to get by either paying for the business solutions (which is a monthly fee and makes your checkouts look like your site) or just go with the standard (no fee, but your checkouts redirect to Paypal's sites then back when the transaction is finished).

Where do you usually get your exposure from? After an initial wave, my views have kinda petered out. Do you find that adding products regularly ups your views?

Got my rings and OH GOD MY HANDS!

I'm nose "down," too. It just seems easier to access the tips and the bulkier bent area when I need them.

    Custom Scales?

Oh, I know. What he wants is a dice bag (which, really, is making the hunt for scales itself more of a PITA than the project is worth), which has a lot of the same risk as wearing it and I've told him as much. However, some people are sure they know more and you can't exactly reason with them (when I first told him I made maille, he spent 15 minutes showing me how much HE knew by discussing the simplicity of the Euro 4-in-1). So, what I'm basically doing is taking the hardest part, which is finding this custom scale design, and hoping the cost might deter him from demanding so much customization. The design itself is pretty interesting. It has more of what I would call a "dragon scale" look to it than the leaf-shape of the scale. Even one of my housemates, who doesn't really have an interest in maille besides "yeah, you made a nifty thing" kinda had a tone of interest when I showed him the scale the guy sketched out.

    Custom Scales?

The client wanted either aluminum or stainless. I think he is leaning toward aluminim more because he mentioned weight a lot. I just happened to only have Titanium to show him what I had access to as far as size. One thing I know he won't budge on is color. Black scales, and I'm pretty sure no matter what I do, I'm gonna have to paint that red trim on my own. I'm assuming the cost is the $600 for set-up, plus the amount of scales I order. Is there a minimum number of scales I would need to order?

    Custom Scales?

Sooooo, I see I'm reviving a really old thread here. But, hopefully after about 2 years, there might be more or new info. I have a potential commission riding on my ability to find me some custom scales. I took with me to the client meeting my titanium small scales I bought a little while back from TRL. He was immediately disappointed that they were too wide and the hole punched at the top was too big. He sketched out on the scale itself what he was looking for as far as size (I can try to scan it if I need to). It would also make my life easier if I can find the right color scheme he wants. Even if I could get these custom scales in black, the idea of painting crimson accents/details along the center and edges.....of every scale.....it just makes me tired all over

To Etsy, or not to Etsy, that is the question

Do you have a significant inventory, Jax? Or does the dwindle comment answer that question already? LoL I set up my Etsy shop just before Thanksgiving and after my initial wave of friends checking the place out, I haven't gotten much in the way of traffic. I'm hoping it'll pick up once I put more inventory, but I'm a worrier anyway :-p

    tumbling bright aluminum?

I was actually just thinking about the validity of using 2 pillow cases. I don't know why I was thinking it might not work, but it's good to know that it will. I'll probably end up doing that.

    tumbling bright aluminum?

I've never tried tumbling in the washer/dryer before. However, on my own, I don't have a big enough load of towels to give it a shot. Do I have anything to worry about if I threw the en-pillow-cased rings in with the household towels? I guess what I'm really trying to figure out is if there's a possibility of the towels getting stained or anything.

Got my rings and OH GOD MY HANDS!

I remember when I started mailling. I bruised up my hands real good. My dad worked at a scrap yard, so I managed to get lots and lots of wire, but that meant I had to coil and cut the rings myself. Between that and the learning to maille, the soft parts of my hand between my thumb and index finger were bruised up! I refused to let pain to stop me from mailling, so I bought myself a pair of bycicle gloves and wore those over a wrapped Ace bandage around that part of my hand and my wrist until the bruising went away.

    How do you save space?

My mom supplies me with a stready supply of used perscription bottles When I first started mailling, that was her idea until we found the little gladware containers. I tend to use those because I can see colors at a quick glance through them.

Konstantin, I both envy and don't envy you I would LOVE to be able to do armor pieces, but I don't seem to have the patience yet. Hopefully one day I will, and the litter buckets is a brilliant idea for when I get there! I'll have to make a note of that for when I reach that point

    How do you save space?

I use that secret all the time! If I have a way to hang it, rather than set it on a surface, I will.
