My first attempt at scale maille.

Besides 5 split rings I am completely out of supplies...need to get another order in soon to finish this one up. Heres a basic pic of what I intend out of all this work.

Can't say I blame him, it'll be at least 2 years till the makers recover...not to mention DHS buying 7000 more AR's this year, I plan to build one this year when things drop in price.

My first attempt at scale maille.

Heres where its at currently, still got around 220 scales and then i'm out till I can make another order for a few thousand...love how the high carbon scales look in the day light, most of the yellow tinged pics are from night (I work nights so tend to be up all night on my weekends). Definitely curing the winter boredom.

What kind of armour is this?

They do that in a bunch of movies, the making of braveheart they said they used a knitted shirt...the only movie I can think of offhand that make maille was lord of the rings, and they used plastic rings.

Thanks guys! its definitely fun to work with...just gotta order more lol
  7. Been making chain maille off and on since about 1998...always wanted to make scale mail but back then it was just not feasible, so I ordered in some high carbon scales to trial if I like it and then order another 7000 - 8000 scales and double that in split rings. Intend to make a hauberk with a mix of high carbon scales and chain. Was a bit tedious to begin with wrapping my head around scale placement, now its simple and got a good rhythm going since my delivery came yesterday (enough for about 2 square feet). Really enjoying this and eventually would love to try the small scales for other projects...heres some pics: Bowie I used to open it I made, overkill much? lol They look rusty but its the flash, they were just covered in what looked like oxide from heat treating (I get it on the blades I make)...rubs off as I weave the maille. Last pic shows how it looks in natural light, I love the variations from the heat treating process. Anyhoo will post more pics as I move along.

I have moving targets I like to call "coyotes" LOL! I love driving 1/5 mile outta town to a range the county put up for us...open 24/7 and when that gets boring I just bust out tannerite. Tax return this year is buying me a Taurus 24/7 G2 (9mm 17+1 capacity) to conceal carry, was going to buy an AR this month and had planned that since last year then the current load of horseradish went down.

    New User Thread

Finally joined up here, lurked for years and ordered from this site when I used to live in Australia (that got expensive lol)...just getting back into it but looking to try scale mail since its all the rage and want some to wear to the midnight screening of the desolation of smaug haha...read the hobbit over 20 years ago and didn't have any mail to wear to the first. It seems real quiet here now though so I dunno how much i'll be on.

    I remember this busier.

I've been lurking for some years, never made an account till today as i'm getting back into mailing...well this time scaling I guess you'd call it, placing an order on friday to get setup again after immigrating to the US from Aus (couldn't bring my rings i'd bought from here, too heavy to ship cost effectively). Sucks to hear its dying off.

    Any gardeners?

I have been doing some gardening, the family lot though usually has over 2900 acres of food growing...but we do pumpkins, squash, peppers, jalopenos, kale, tomatoes, potatoes, cucumber and a few others. Also not so much crop garden but have a lily bed and cultivate bonsai from local found trees growing off the side of the bluff that I climb down and get after they're big enough to pot and train.
