  1. Made my first Large order, and I am very excited. Hoping to have a scale inlay done by October, and a hauberk done by... we'll see

its only May, you can do it.

well... That's my hope. I am still very much a novice when it comes to scaling, and I have never attempted an inlay, but I work well with my hands and the samples I made came out well and didn't take too long... so we'll see. Also, by using butted instead of split rings for the small scale inlay I have a feeling it will go a LOT faster. I had a hard time with the split rings on the small scales, but worked great with them on the large scales, which is what my hauberk will be ou...

Thank you! I looked around a bit myself before concluding that if anyone HAD actually done testing, there was little to no evidence/proof of the results, so I figured when I had the time, I would put together a little something. I agree completely that a leather backing/pre-armor, would help it withstand the forces much more readily, and spread out the impacts even more, but I wanted something that would show penetration, and not waste the small bit of leather I currently have at my disposal if the armor were to fail, like it did with the Blowgun or Arrows. I also have been toying with the idea of doing another test but with a full e4-1 backing which would provide even more anti-penetration and force spreading. If you were to wear proper cotton+leather padding underneath, I would have no doubt that this armor could stand up to some serious abuse, especially the large scales, and even more so if you were to use welded rings as opposed to the split rings, in a full e4-1 pattern of rings with scales. With welded rings you would even be able to reduce the weight significantly, unless you were doing the full e4-1pattern, but even then, would be significantly less than a full e4-1 with split rings, due to the lack of overlap. I am looking for a broken microwave even now to make a MOT welder to use for ring welding. Thanks for the feedback! I hope my testing helps a few people anyway, and I would be happy to see more, or more intense testing, with proper ballistics gel and the like...
  3. Updating my status in hopes we(the many who have asked in the appropriate forum area) can get an update on SCALELG-MS-HARD even if its bad news.

Most efficient ring size/ar for an inlay?

I understand the points being made, but as the title suggests this is about efficiency, not best looking. I realize the smaller tighter the ring, the better looking it will end up overall, in terms of image quality, but that completely eliminates the efficiency of the project, which was the original question here. By my calculations the 16g 3/16" rings which have an AR of 3.3, not hugely different from the 3.9 AR of the rings I believe I will use, are more than double the cost per square foot at $66.52, vs $31.81 for the 12g 3/8" rings. Keep in mind this is in addition to more than triple the work based on number of rings utilized. 1344 rings/foot vs 4794 rings/foot.

    Sanding down pliers?

I will probably end up sanding them or carefully dremeling that section out a little for speed's sake then, and see how it goes. thanks for the input

oh the humanity... you just had me on a 2 hour kick looking for broken microwaves on craigslist so I could make one of those... oh internet... why have you forsaken me...

do you think it would make much of a difference with the split rings? I would like a slightly tighter weave, I find the scales just a hair too far apart, so the extra little bit might help it for me, but I feel like it might be a ton of extra weight but not very much benefit. also, how much does it effect the stiffness? I don't want it to feel restrictive if I do a full hauberk that way.

If only I had an extra $600 for a ring welder and knew how to use one... I am sure welded rings would be a stronger option. I don't know if it was noticed but just at the very top of the large scale sample I used a full 4-1 pattern with the extra ring between 4 other rings for added but probably unnecessary strength. I sort of want to do a whole piece like that but I think the added weight wouldn't be worth it any suggestions/input? Also I finished the edge on the large scales but not on the small ones.

and drum roll please....... the MUCH anticipated (yeah right) sequel to the ever popular scale maille testing pictures video... the companion DVD part 2... okay really its just the video footage that I was complaining about not being able to work with on the computer. I had to edit it on the youtube website, so its not great and the video quality is poor, but at least you will get the idea what I did to see what the pictures represent. Thanks for checking it out! Also, guess I was wrong, there was one arrow that penetrated the small scales, and the spear head dart that penetrated the large scales, which you can view in the video.

List of 2 Months of New Stuff

Just curious if it was even a thought, glad to hear it is, and I will keep my eyes open for it if and when it comes around. one more question though... will you now be including a sample of the new shape in your scales sample bag?

Couldn't get the videos to work even after doing that and trying a few other tricks, and a registry clean... trying to play them in media player, or trying to open them in movie maker instantly resulted in the program having an error and crashing/closing. HOWEVER, I did manage to finish making a video with just the pictures, and will use the flipvideo software to make a small movie of the raw footage separately to go along with it. Here is the pictures only video... its too late to start editing the other one, but don't worry it will be up soon.

I'll give that a try and see what I can do... hopefully it works and I can get something posted sooner than later... I wouldn't want to disappoint now that I have people all interested in it.
