    Wire knotted workshops...Ottawa

Yeah, I gotta get my payment to you as well. Will do that this week (pay week for me). I'm soooo looking forward to this.

50 feet of silver wire would probably scare the hell outta me for a ring ;-) But no problem, I got what you were trying to figure out.

I think locally there is Rainbow Minerals. I haven't contacted them in a very long time though, and they do tend to be a bit more expensive than other places. I'll see how I do on the workshop before I buy a few hundred dollars of precious metal wire ;-) I'm looking forward more and more to the workshop now.

    More Flowers

Ok, I got my supplies, and thanks to Raige's tutorial, I made some. These are going to be some gifts to some friends for Valentine's day coming up. I'm making more (I have way too many female friends it seems). The forward picture is a bit out of focus, but I'm not too worried about that right now. I'm still figuring out how to attach the green scales as leaves. I may just skip that part altogether.

Nice to see the signup page on Loren's site filling up. As I had mentioned, it's probably easier to send him a Paypal payment directly, but if you don't use paypal, we can meet up and if you give me the cash, I can send it to him that way. I'll have to find a source locally for some precious metal wire to make some extra rings after the fact. I think I know of a place that I can get the Gold wire from.

    More Flowers

You would be correct about the anodizing issue. I guess I could have sorted through and found all perfect ones, but that isn't as much fun ;-) I think the few spots make it look a bit more authentic as a flower...not all flowers are perfect either.

You mentioned extra materials. If I were to place an order for wire at TRL, what size wire would you recommend? I'm thinking along the lines of the gold wire. Size and length would be important to know I guess. I'm thinking on making a few rings after the workshop.

I guess we can start the collection of the money at any time. My suggestion for this is to make payment directly to Loren via his website http://www.golden-knots.com/signup.html There is a paypal link at the bottom, and also his phone number if you don't wish to use paypal, but a credit card directly with him. He has a signup form that can keep track of who has paid and who is pending and all that as well.

Maille shirt for a teddy bear?

Pattern? I've never seen a pattern for a teddy bear shirt...I just made a simple tube and strap design to fit the bear and expanded it from there after putting it on the bear. In fact, I think I may have mailled it right on the little bugger.

Well, we want to max out at 10 I think. So if we can hit 10, woo hoo! Also, we have to get the money to Loren well in advance (flights, supplies etc..)

I have added the poll, but forgot to put an option of "either is good"...ack!

If it's easier, do we want to do the weekend before that which I posted then? I'll leave that decision up to the group!

    Wire knotted workshops...Ottawa

I've been talking with Loren about this, and here's the info I have so far. "My workshops run $175/student, and that includes everything -- show up empty-handed and leave wearing jewelry." We also have the situation of 1 or 2 days. Loren would prefer the workshop be 2 days to make it easier to answer questions, offer a challenge to those that may be grasping this very easily, answering questions, and various other things. So, we can ask the group that will be attending, do we want 1 or 2 days? I'd personally prefer 2 days at this point. And our class is starting to fill up nicely.

Ok, after messaging Loren, we are looking at April 12-13 for the workshop. So based on those dates, let's firm up people. Also, we will need to get the money to Loren in advance (he has to pay for supplies and a flight). There are options available at this point... 1. You can get the money to me, and I will collect it and send it to Loren 2. Loren accepts Paypal payments or credit cards over the phone (see his website for details on this I guess). So let's consider this a go at this point for April 12-13 in Ottawa. Exact location to be determined.

Ess, We seem to be moving along on this undertaking. It looks like it will be March or April based on Loren's website schedule. That works well for me as well. I may have another person interested in taking the workshop now as well that isn't part of this board, so we should be able to meet our quota of people.

    hackey sacks/ juggle balls

Well, to plug TRL, I bought a few of the juggling ball kits from them and sold them as hackey's. People really seemed to like them, and I have not had one sent back for repairs yet. However, I didn't tell them about the flaming ones yet....lol

    Well, that was dumb

I've started playing with the viking knit stuff (yeah, not really maille related, but working with wire...right?). I had some silver wire kicking around and I made a few necklaces (nice and dainty). So I hop onto TRL, order some silver wire....ordered 22ga as the previous stuff was 24 and I wanted it a bit bigger. Unfortunately I didn't pay attention, and I got half hard. It doesn't do too well for drawing through a draw plate. However, now I have to learn knots like Loren does as this seems to be a fabulous size for that, and the half hard would work well I think. So, here I go again!

    Well, that was dumb

It's half hard that I've currently got (dead soft is on it's way). I'm gonna try to do a knot this coming week. I have so many projects on the go right now though. I stupidly agreed to make a shirt (aluminum) and quoted the wrong price, but I'm gonna stick to that price even though it means I'm working for basically free. Oh well, these things happen. I'm also almost done my scale shirt too. So between those, making viking knit necklaces and now wanting to do knots for fun, we'll see how crazy I get.

    Scale Help

Like a previous post said, if you add the 5th ring making it e4-1 instead of j4-1, it will solve this problem. Add the extra ring to the outside scales. Making it wider won't solve the issue, you'll still have it, but have it wider. If you look at TRL's scale page, it shows the sides finished. Look at the "closeup of edge" link. http://theringlord.com/images/products/scales/scaleedge.jpg
  20. I personally use some really small pliers from Canadian Tire. They are like a buck a piece, maybe 2. They work quite well, have the springback feature I like, and have teeth. They fit somewhat comfortably in my hand (the ends tend to press into the meaty part of the palm of my hand). I can work with these for many hours. I take breaks about every 20 minutes, just to rest my hands, but other than that they work. Oh, and I've been doing 16 5/16 stainless for the scales. Just for reference. In fact, other than aluminum, I use these for pretty much everything I do. For Aluminum, I have many pairs of pliers from TRL (the TRL branded ones). Those are fabulous for aluminum. About the same size as the CT ones I use.

    Cone ends for viking knit

looks like FMG will be my choice for the ends. I went to the local beading store and they were like $6 for a pair of Sterling cones, and they only had one size...ugh

    Cone ends for viking knit

I've been trying to find a place to get the ends for a viking knit necklace I made. Just the cones that fit on the end. Does anyone have a source? Is there a store that you know of that sells them that I might find here in Ottawa?

    Cone ends for viking knit

I visited a few craft stores last night and came up empty. I'll go to the last place I know of in the area tonight and check them out. I'm planning on doing a few necklaces in this weave, so I'll probably need a bunch of them. Will have FMGs prices on me when I go to the local store and if they can get pretty close, I'll stay local, if not, to the US I go to get them. Hell, with the exchange rate in my favor right now, probably not too bad!

    Large Aluminum Scale Chad Kit

bit late to chime in on this thread, but I've been making my scale shirt off and on using the kit. I ran out of scales and rings at about the 3/4 point and had to order more. I'd suggest ordering more rings and scales when you order the kit (if you haven't already). I had the bulk of it done in about 12 hours of work. I made a vest a while back (basically just a front piece with chain holding it on at the back...yes, I'll post pics soon) that I finished in about 5 hours. So I find scales very easy to work with (butted rings mind you) and they go together nice and quick for me. Scale seems to be my favorite thing to work in these days.

Ok, just for my own knowledge anyway, and maybe others, how much were you selling them for?
