Maille purse with lid folded back.

My wife is quite fond of premium brand purses like the ones from Coach and the like. She finds it frustrating though when her coworkers take a liking as well and buy identical purses or very similar ones. So I have made an attempt to create a fashion purse out of maille that is unique from anything her friends can find. I tried to avoid the chain sack method that tends to be the norm or the coif puch method more common to dice bags. Though both have thier place I was looking for a design that didn't scream maille immediately. So here is the result. Made with 16g 1/4 EPDM and anodized aluminum with and a bronze HP 4-1 strap.

    Fashion Barrel Bag

I was in the mood to come up with a design to mimic the little clutch purses that seem only large enough to hold the most essential items during a social function. I started with a pill shape in mind but it came out like a barrel in the end. E 6-1 16g 1/4" purple and pink anodized aluminum and black EPDM. I know by definition that a clutch has no strap but I stuck a strand of bronze JPL on because I like to throw even my smallest bags over my shoulder. The bag is 6" long and 4" wide. Unlike my larger handbag the lid is also 6-1 to maintain firmness and shape to the body of the barrel. Only the hinge is woven with a more relaxed 5-1 method to also the lid to open and close with little resistance.

    Card Wallet

More often I have noticed the ladies packing light when going out for the evening. It is common for my wife to ditch the purse and just carry the essential IDs and debit/credit cards. It is also often she finds numerous cards and keys belonging to her companions in her wallet after an evening out. This card wallet is an option to have some protection for just the essentials. Enough room for your cards and even a stash for some cash all attached to your keys if needed. Also great for organizing the most essentials if you are sporting a fashionable purse where space is a premium. Made with 16g 1/4 AA and EPDM rings this E 6-1 prototype could display a custom inlay and would likely be even more appealing if made with 18g 3/16 of the same materials. This card wallet is stitched 2/3 if the way around leaving a suitable slot to access the contents. The slot is secured by clasping the corner stainless rings preventing the contents from shifting free of the wallet. A slight pinch of the opposing corners will spread the wallet allowing easy access the the contents. Much like an old school coin purse. The clasp can serve double duty as a key chain as shown in the prototype.

    Card Wallet

With the clasp on the cards cannot fall out. Even without the clasp on the rubber rings creat a fair bit of traction so nothing slides around inside.

    Sca chainmail materials

Just a comparison. A stainless steel hauberk will cost you about $100 more than a galvanized steel one. The bonuses are it looks far more awesome, it is really easy to maintain, and doesn't smell. It will not get grungy and gooey like galvy. I have numerous shirts in stainless and do not ever regret the decision. Really the only negative to going stainless is the extra cost of materials.

Color question, AA rings vs scales/tags

It is pretty darn close. Bronze AA rings are the same colour as the other items yet you will find that smaller rings seem a bit darker or denser in colour than the larger rings. That is more to do with dimension than the colouring. Also any batch will have minute differences though most of the current process colours I have found are close enough for customer concerns.

    WONDERFUL - A few Questions

Armour quality rings are a different subject. AA is rarely use for armour unless it is costume grade and needs colour yet it is generally too soft for significant physical activity. Most folks go to a steel option for armor they want to have some play in. There are different kinds of difficult when your winding coils for rings. The AA challenge is the stress it puts on the color layer. It can crack and stretch so the end result is less desirable. That is why most premade AA rings are anodized as a coil and then cut into rings so the oxide layer is protected. Armor grade wire is a fair deal harder to wind than aluminum. That is just due to its strength and hardness. It will also be far harder to cut, shear, saw depending on the method you choose to seperate the rings. The benefit though is you can save a few bucks doing it yourself compared to buying finished rings as it's fairly easy to replicate the quality. My recommendation for new maillers is always to start with premade rings. Get to learn how much you like the craft, and what you like to make before investing in the tools to make rings. By the time you are ready to start winding your own you will have a very good idea what you want to make and will not rely on others to guild you on what to start with.

    WONDERFUL - A few Questions

To add to what Redbeard said it is in the end less expensive to buy the finished rings. You will have far less wasted wire from the winding process even if every ring you made came out perfect. Not to say that winding other metals isn't cost effective. Getting reliable rings from AA can be a challenge without some wire waste and defective rings. One benefit of making your own though allows you to make sizes that a retailer doesn't. If you need that flexibility then it can be worth the cost.

    Dragon Scale Wings

I think you mean the eagle wings. They tend to be a popular option. I am not perfectly sure the ring sized as I don't have an example in front of me but I think the large ones were 18 or 19g 1/4 inch and the small ones likely 20g 5/32 or very near.

Did the walnut have any additives? Hard to tell if that is a chemical patina or a pitted finish. Try throwing it in some brown rice for a while.

Though I somehow desire the firmness displayed in the sample the rigidity is restrictive. Beautiful none the less.

Has anyone made Maille from crush washers?

Simple fact. There are no manufactred washers that I know of that more cost efficient for making maille. Wether you are manufacturing your own rings or buying them washers are more costly than many options. Of course unless you inherited numerous tones of random washers. Washers are good for creating specific asthetic effect. Otherwise they are generally not desirable.

If you have a link to examples please share them. Some of us may be able to eyeball a solution for you. You could also consider a helm sphere. The ones shown hold 3/4 inch plastic beads and could be scaled up a bit for an D/20. Only drawback is they may obscure the die more than you might wish.

    Tag hole punching

That punch is handy if you want those sized holes. It will deform though after many uses. Drill bits are far less expensive to replace. I meant to mention that using lubrication and a slow drilling speed will help give you nice clean holes that will need little finishing. You can use cooking oil as a lube.
