Okay, steel does fight back - A new person.

Word of suggestion... Make square patches and connect the patches together. When you add 100 rings to 2000 rings you don't see any progress but when you connect a 12 row by 12 column patch to another you see a big difference. When I was working on my 1st shirt that's what I did. Because I got to the point I could make a 12x12 patch in about an hour. Being able to see the progress made me want to work on it more. V/r Md

    The Best Pliers?

I use 1 pair of smooth duckbill (flatnose) pliers and 1 pair of bent needle nose pliers. On the bent ones I usually use the bend for holding rings unless I'm doing seam work and need to get into a tight spot. I've used them on 16ga 3/16 SS. I don't think there is a universally best pliers. It all depends on what works for you and what you are comfortable with.

    Alternatives to padded gambeson

I wear just a shirt under mine. Nothing heavy at all. I also wear a Kings belt over the chain. that helps with taking some of the weight off the shoulders. I just wore my hauberk for `13 hours last saturday no issues. Weight distribution is very important. You will need padding if it's just hanging from your shoulders.

    Hemming Euro 4 in 1

The collar looks to be Euro 4 in 1 box. It's just 4 rows of Euro connected together. The sleeve looks like Full Persian 6 in 1. Both are chain style weaves instead of a sheet weave. It looks like the vest is attached to each where ever an edge ring can be placed cosmetically appealing.

Normal is a setting on a washing machine! Thank god I'm not normal. I could only imagine how boring that would be.

Need help on rings size for stretchy bracelet

I use 18 3/16 and 16 5/16 for Half persian 3 in 1 and 4 in 1. It'll also work for Euro 4 in 1 but looks better in a euro 6 in 1. Both of which can be done flat or in round form. I've seen Byzantine in 16 5/16 stretchy. I've also done Captive inverted round in 18 3/16.

transitioning from large scale to e 4-1

If I'm not mistaken the rings used for large scales are 16ga 5/16id. Which also makes a very nice E4in1. So trasitioning from large scles to E4in1 using that size would flow naturally.

  14. I'd really like the E4in1 shirt done. But would also be interested on how the Gantlet would turn out. The shirts are stainless and the gantlet is Titanium. Do you think either would be possible?

Need advice for a chainmail shirt

I've done one in 16ga 5/16 stainless using E4in1. Ring count came out just over 16000. It's very simple barrel style(no contractions) vest. I did make a "V" in the front and back and the sides go straight down with a smaller "V" on them. Weight wise I think it's around 20lbs.(estimate there). I just finished another using Jap 4 in 1. Large rings being 16ga 5/16 and small rings doubled 18ga 3/16. Not sure of the ring count. It is longer and weighs a bit more. The 24ga would be an extreme shirt. In my opinion I wouldn't go smaller then 18ga 3/16. But that's just me. I would suggest make a small square patch and figure out how long that took. Then figure out how many of those patches you would need. That will give you a rough estimate on time and material. Also when I did my shirts I did them in patches and then connected the patches together. You see more results when you add a row to a patch that's 10 rows big compared to adding 1 run to 100 rows. It gave me a better sense of accomplishment.

    Patches

Random idea I had. I'm sure I'm not the first to do it though. I patched a pair of holey jeans with maille. Stats 18ga 3/16id. Euro 4in1. Then sewn on with upholstery thread. I'l get more pics when the are modeled. What do y'all think?

    Patches

I hand sewn them on using upholstery thread with no less then 3 stitches per ring. Thank you everyone for the comments. V/r MD

    Virginia Ren Fest?

Is anyone going as a playtron or merchant? I'll be there as a playtron on the 18th. If anyone is interested the website is varf.org. It's a small festival but it is nice. V/r MD

    Virginia Ren Fest?

It's a nice small Festival. I mainly go for more inspiration. As if I don't have enough have finished projects. Also it's a good excuse to get all decked out in garb.

The fur is a Coyote pelt not sheep. Thank you Mewpal
  24. Using the 4 in1 pattern you're looking at approx. 22000 rings. It will be a little less because the scales on the bottom rows only have 2 rings. Still it's quite impressive!

    Square wire ring maille concerns

I've used the 16516 square wire rings. The flat rings (wound with flat against the mandrel) behave very similar to 16516 round wire. I've also used the ones on edge(corner against the mandrel) It is a lot tighter for most weaves. I'm in the process of moving and can't find the random pieces I have laying around. But both forms work for E4in1 and 6in1. The flats work for Hp3in1 and 4in1 but the edge ones are tight unless your sculpting. V/r MD
