    The 'nerd' factor

I posted this in the chat room, but upon consideration I think it actually belongs here Most people ( not all, some are repeat customers)when I say I make chainmaille, dismiss it as a quirk, that i am a nerd. It's more than a little irritating. I do good work. It is sound, the closures are flush, I have a pretty good repertoire of weaves and on top of that I try to make unique stuff. Have I just not found the right crowd? What can I as a chainmailler do to make people more enthusiastic about our craft? It's not like building a bracelet is as fascinating to them as to us! Cheers and happy mailling.

    Niobium burrs.

Wow, the colours on the rings was fantastic but the rings had some nasty burrs from the saw cutting. Can I tumble these in the future without damaging the anodization?
  3. What I would do instead of making a plain loop is give the wire a bit of a twist below the loop around the part of the wire that goes through the bead. You will have to make sure you loop the next wire through the previously made loop as you build the necklace The necklace will be quite sturdy of you do it this way, very little chance of the loops opening.

    When I was younger...

Sticking my brothers GI joe into a red ant hill. Not good, Sneaking under the fence ( my dad was military, posted in Germany) to go catch salamanders and snakes and feed the German lady's horses. Those were the best childhood memories ever. Except the red ant one, that sucked.

  6. Will the 13 mm clasp hook onto the sterling star? I have an order for a sterling/niobium bracelet (in 20 ga) and I have teeny tiny 7 mm clasps and a couple monstrous 13 mm. Tube clasps won't work because the bracelet will only be 1 cm wide... I just think hooking a big ol clasp to a 18 ga ring will kind of look silly... Any advice?

Ring size for 3/4 persian wrap

I want to wrap a loonie in 3/4 persian, what's a good size?
  8. Apparently the foil technique makes the silver more porous and more prone to tarnish, this is what I have heard... But I never noticed a difference.
  9. I have a few mangled niobium rings and scrap silver. I might just do that experiment...

    Dragonscale on the bias

Help? How? Is it just done by adding rings on one side and substracting them on the other? Ohhhh. That makes no sense... Phooey.

    Dragonscale on the bias

Thank you. That's exactly what I thought.

    Colours are gorgeous.

    mobius ball aspect ratios

  15. I would like to know more about this as well. Particularly sterling and niobium. I can't tumble niobium... But I need to keep my sterling shiny!

    Sandals?

I'm just wondering if anyone has done anything involving sandals. Add ons? Buying soles and making straps? I think there would really be a market for it. I am really just looking for input, ideas and a good discussion since I haven't tried anything yet.
  17. I gave myself a nice set of blisters the other day.

      calyx

Eh, annoying if it puts you out of mailling action for a few days!

    Sandals?

Yes, this all true, but damn they would look cool. I was also considering adding chainmaille embellishments, but finding a sandal plain enough has proved to be a challenge.

    Weaves you DO like

Whirlybird? Is there another name for this weave? My personal fav is HP 4-1, I'm good at it so it's fast and cool looking. I love the look of viperscale but it's so time consuming and I like using ARs that are close to the min for my weaves so correcting a mistake is hard. I also like gsg or any persian variant.

    HP4-1

Sterling and green niobium hp4-1 necklace. 20ga with an AR of 5ish. Not sure the ID.

    Wrapped pearl ring prototype

I built this ring out of 22 ga rings wrapped around a freshwater pearl. Some of the closures are less than perfect because I wanted to see if it would work. I was in a hurry. Lol. It did. And more will be built.

    What are your favorite metals?

Sterling and niobium. Love the weight, love the colours. But for base metals copper and bronze.

    Scale hole ID

Huh, guess I didn't look very hard. Thanks.

    Scale hole ID

Anyone know what the ID of the holes in the scales are? Thanks.

This was the most annoyingly tight weave I have ever had the misfortune of trying. (why did I continue when I realized it would be so tight, because I am stubborn, that's why.) I could barely close the big rings without forcing the small ones open, so excuse the closures. The clasp is also my first ever attempt at saw cutting and drilling plate metal. Stats Bronze saw cut 19g 7/32" (i think) for the large, 20 g 1/8" for the small.
