    Attaching maille to leather

    I hope I am not repeating a previous question. Does anyone have methods for attaching maille to leather? For example, E4in1 to say a medium leather backing for use as a trivet? I don't own a leather sewing machine, and that may not be the best equipment anyway. A friend mentioned maybe using an awl to do the work, but I don't know anything about lock stitching and how well it might hold. I'm not making a trivet, lol but the concept for sewing it to anything should be the same. What about using that false sinew I see in hobby shops? I think the 'thread' type is important, but also the method as well. Looking at the awl it seems straight forward enough... any help would be appreciated!
