twilightbanana posted a topic in DiscussionSo, I had a little dilemma. Two bags of scales, one plain mild steel, the other hardened. Unlabeled. How to tell which is which? First I looked at the finish. The scales in bag 1 were grey and had a film of oil, bag 2 were slightly rusty and brownish. I took that as a sign that bag 2 was hardened: the heat treating process would have polymerized the oil left on the scales from the manufacturing process. Then I tried scraching a scale from one bag with the other. A scale from bag 1 just slid across the surface of the scale from bag 2. The other way around, the scale from bag 2 left a clear scratch on the scale from bag 1. Harder materials can scratch softer materials, but not the other way around. It seemed pretty clear at this point, but just to be certain I had one more test. Trying to bend them with pliers. The scale from bag 1 bent with some effort. I was not able to bend the scale from bag 2. 3 out of 3: bag 2 clearly held the hardened scales. Very interesting to observe how much difference the hardening treatment makes.
Hi! I was wondering if there were any plans to make silvered AA for aluminum scales and 14ga rings? I really really love the silvered AA, and I wish scales came in it, and that rings bigger than 16ga had silvered colors too... (Yes, I know that there are silvered rings for 14ga 15/16", but I'd like to work with bigger 14ga rings like 7/16"...) Anyway, I would like to know so I can either get the non-silvered stuff for some projects I want to do, or hold out for silvered. Thanks!
Hello, I would like to make a 6 inch by 6 inch swath of 6 in 1 european chainmail. I am interested in the stainless steel punched rings that are 16g Wire diam. 0.062" 1.6mm 3/8"ID I see that the bag contains 300 rings. Would that be enough to make a 6 inch by 6 inch swath? Also, I am interested in the small stainless steel scales and like the chainmail, I would like to make a 6 inch by 6 inch swath. How many scales would I need for that and is it possible to rivet the rings with the scalemail? My last question is what size of rivets would I need to make riveted chainmail/scale mail? I am doing this for college in a "how to speech" so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time!
