new concept? fender washer lamellar armor

Recommended Posts

see all the pics here http://seniorelmeowmeow.tumblr.com/post/78075646701/trying-armor-made-from-washers-and-zip-ties-and

it can be done with zip ties, or nylon para cord with the knots melted shut. I tried hemp rope first, it was a pain in the but plus it means the entire row and collum come undone if one washer is hit. I might try twisted steel wire next.

Not a new concept, but nicely executed, search for "chinese coin armor" on google for a few similar types.

Try making of it a "pennyplate jack."  Even fender washers, though, would be very heavy if used throughout a jack.  It's better -- lighter -- to use thinner sheet metal, punching a hole in the center of a square of the stuff and then clipping all four corners off, to give clearance for the cord pattern that networks them together.  Scottish Borderers pages have the how-to for making pennyplate jacks, or stuffed jacks.

What's my idea of thinner metal?  For this, 20ga-22ga stainless, for rust resistance.  A very slight dishing of each penny-plate helps fit them to you and makes them rather stronger for no increase in weight.

Though I see the Wiki page remains, which should be of some use.  For other views, I'd immediately google on "jack of plate."  And find out what happened to the Borderers site.

Here's the article on the X-rayed jack: https://archive.is/20121224053656/http://www.royalarmouries.org.uk/what-we-do/research/analytical-projects/the-jack-of-plates-evidence-of-re-cycling

Royalarmouries.org would likely be a very fruitful site.
